LMH Supports Yes To Homes Campaign

We are in the middle of a housing shortage that shows little sign of abating. House prices have risen to the point where an entire generation is struggling to afford a home.

In our cities, many people can’t afford to rent a home in the neighbourhoods where they grew up. In the countryside, homes are more expensive than in cities and towns, and often way beyond the means of many local residents.

The solution to this problem is simple. We need to build more homes. But to make a bad situation worse, people are saying ‘no’ to much-needed new homes in their community.

Just a small handful of people can block the new homes that are a lifeline for many. When they are the only people putting pressure on local politicians their views are heard loud and clear.

All too often the people who actually need homes are missing from local debates. That’s why we have launched the Yes to Homes campaign. We want to make sure people who do support more housing are included in the debate.

What is stopping the right homes, being built in the right place and at the right price where you live?

And what can you do to put pressure on local decision makers, mainly councillors, to change things?

The first step couldn’t be easier. Be part of the solution.

Tell your local councillors you say Yes to Homes

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) has been crowned the greenest business in Merseyside.

The 15,000-home landlord won the Environmental Business of the Year title at the ECHO Environment Awards.

LMH impressed green experts with its holistic approach to tackling fuel poverty among tenants, reducing carbon emissions and creating sustainable jobs.

LMH Chief Executive, Steve Coffey, said: “Being judged Merseyside’s Environmental Business of the Year is a great honour for everyone who has committed to our strategy to be as green as possible in everything we do.

“Our approach is centred around our tenants.  We are continuously working to reduce their energy bills or create jobs so they have more money in their pockets in these tough economic times.

“We have invested over £250m greening homes across the city which has created and supported over 1,000 jobs and 100 apprentices, while reducing harmful emissions in the process.

“We set very challenging environmental targets and have a range of new initiatives planned for the year ahead focussing on educating tenants and younger generations so they can play a bigger part protecting the planet.”

LMH’s green work is underpinned by its GIFT (Green Initiatives for Tomorrow) strategy across all sectors and service areas.

Its work retrofitting properties and building new homes using the latest energy efficient products and techniques has seen many tenants’ fuel bills cut in half.

Tenants continue to benefit from LMH’s Local Solutions scheme that sees staff making sure they are on the best energy tariff, challenging billing errors and offering tips to reduce fuel usage in the home.

Work is well underway on LMH’s £40m Environmental Works programme that will see main routes from the city centre to Everton FC and Liverpool FC stadiums, Aintree Racecourse, the Docks and once built, Liverpool Waters, drastically transformed.

Nearly 4,000 homes will receive new fences, over 500 new roofs will be fitted, 4,200 homes will benefit from roof repairs, and the communal areas of 140 flats will be overhauled.

Gates, gardens and public green land will also enjoy significant makeovers.

A £2m scheme to build 18 modern town houses in Barlow Street, Walton will halve tenants’ annual fuel bills.

The properties will also meet Level Four of the Code for Sustainable Homes, cutting carbon emissions by nearly two thirds.  A total of 1,000 similar homes are planned.

LMH is also at the forefront of Project Viridis - a consortium of Merseyside landlords - and is creating a sub-regional approach to delivering energy efficiency and linking the investment to the local economy by working closely with the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.

Since LMH formed five years ago, over 13,000 A-rated energy efficient central heating systems have been installed in tenants’ homes.

More than 7,000 properties have been fitted with double-glazed windows manufactured in reinforced PVC-U that has a lifespan in excess of 40 years.

1,415 properties have benefited from the use of Structherm insulted structural cladding while over 10,000 homes have received loft and or cavity wall insulation.

Nearly 2,000 properties had loft insulation included when new roofs were fitted.

Liverpool Mutual Homes’ (LMH) efforts tackling fuel poverty, reducing carbon emissions and creating sustainable jobs has been recognised by green experts.

LMH has been shortlisted as the Environmental Business of the Year in the Liverpool ECHO Environment Awards.

What have we done to achieve this?

  • Our GIFT strategy (Green Initiatives for Tomorrow) across all sectors of the business helps to make it as ‘green’ as possible.
  • To date, we have invested over £250million in energy efficient housing stock improvements and created and supported 1,000 jobs and 100 apprenticeships.
  • Our Local Solutionsscheme has enabled us to appoint two new officers late last year and already they have helped over 300 tenants by assessing their circumstances and switching their energy suppliers so they are on the most appropriate and value for money tariffs.  We also review and challenge billing errors and offer a range of energy efficiency tips to help drive down usage in the home.

  • We have started our £40m Environmental Works programme that will see main routes from the city centre to Everton FC and Liverpool FC stadiums, Aintree Racecourse, the Docks and once built, Liverpool Waters, drastically transformed.

Nearly 4,000 homes will receive new fences, over 500 new roofs will be fitted, 4,200 homes will benefit from roof repairs, and the communal areas of 140 flats will be overhauled.

Gates, gardens and public green land will also enjoy significant makeovers.

Five Strong Years

Since LMH formed five years ago, 13,082 energy efficient central heating systems with a ‘Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK’ A-rating and a zero Ozone Depletion Potential rating have been installed.

  • 7,193 properties have been fitted with double-glazed windows manufactured in reinforced PVC-U that has a lifespan in excess of 40 years.
  • 1,415 properties have benefited from the use of Structherm insulted structural cladding while over 10,000 homes have received loft and or cavity wall insulation.
  • 1,868 properties had loft insulation included when new roofs were fitted.

Director of Assets and Enterprise at LMH, Maggi Howard, said: “Being shortlisted for the Environmental Business of the Year is evidence of our sustainable approach across every aspect of the organisation.

“We have set ourselves very challenging green targets and always look for the most sustainable option so our tenants and the local community benefit.

“Fuel poverty is a very serious issue so it is imperative in our role as a landlord that we lower tenants’ energy bills and help them save vital money.

“Our work installing green technologies to the 15,000 properties we have regenerated has also boosted the regional economy, supporting 1,000 jobs and 100 apprentices.

“We have made a significant impression on the green agenda in Liverpool and have a host of new initiatives and schemes for the year ahead that will improve this even further.

Working With Schools

LMH will visit primary schools taking its ‘Sammy Save A lot’ and ‘Wendy Waste It All’ characters who feature in an educational comic to communicate with youngsters so they can think about saving energy and the effects on the planet.

The comic features stories, puzzles and group activities aimed specifically at young children.

Another fun education scheme sees LMH taking its Pedal Power bike into schools to provide a fun and healthy element to educating pupils about alternative energy sources.

The bike powers appliances such as a smoothie maker and a laptop.

To engage youngsters further, LMH is going to challenge schools to design a more portable version of the bike that can be taken to community events for demonstrations so even more people can learn about the environment.
