School children inspired by careers

10 July 2009

Children from a Liverpool primary school learnt about a variety of careers as part of a special aspirations day.

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) and one of its partners, asset management company Mitie, organised the event at St Hugh's Catholic Primary School.

LMH's Customer Involvement Team’s, Dave Pye, informed pupils about the work it carries out in communities across the city, while safety officer Bill Bolan talked to Year 6 pupils about anti-social behaviour and the negative consequences for children who cause trouble.

Children then took part in a construction and agricultural workshop led by Mitie officers and built trellis fences and wooden troughs, which were planted with flowers.

Other classes at the Earle Road School learnt about life as an electrician, while Mitie staff gave children an insight into office-based careers.

LMH Chief Executive, Steve Coffey, said: "Our role as a housing association is not just about bricks and mortar but improving the lives of all our tenants and their families by educating them on issues such as careers, health, protecting the environment and anti-social behaviour.

"The day was a big success and we are now looking at holding the days at other schools in the future."

St Hugh’s Primary School headteacher, Collette Denby, said: "It is really important for our pupils to hear about the many different careers that are open to them and we’d like to thank LMH and Mitie for spending time educating the children.

“The talks held by LMH on anti-social behaviour and its work in the community has helped to reinforce with the children the importance of respect within the community.”
