Noisy Neighbours Service
The Council's Public Protection Division can deal with noise nuisance from problem neighbours. The types of issues that they commonly deal with are:
- shouting, banging doors persistently
- TVs or stereos too loud
- musical instruments
- animals e.g. barking dogs, crowing cockerels
- DIY work at unreasonable hours
- intruder alarms
If you need our help with a noise complaint, they would deal with it in the following manner: They will send you a log sheet on which to record details of the noise and the times and dates when it occurs. This information will help to plan their investigation of your complaint.
They will also write to the person or organisation you are complaining about advising them that a complaint has been made. All complaints are dealt with in confidence and they never divulge your identity without your prior consent. In the majority of cases, the letter they send out is effective in curtailing the noise.
When you return the log sheet, an inspector will investigate your complaint and carry out monitoring visits to establish if a statutory nuisance exists. If there is evidence that it does, they will serve a notice requiring the noise to stop. If the notice is ignored, they can prosecute. They can also obtain a warrant from a magistrate, in appropriate cases, to seize noise-making equipment.
Where an inspector cannot find evidence of a nuisance you may be advised on how you can take action yourself in the magistrates' court.
