Barclays Horizon: Education grants for lone parents

Barclaycard's Horizon scheme is now open for applications, and grants of up to £1,000 are on offer for single parents who want to improve their employment prospects through education.

The grants can be used to cover the cost of course fees, books, travel expenses and even childcare for any vocational training course that will help you return to work or improve your earning potential.

The scheme does have quite strict eligibility criteria (you will need to be a single parent in receipt of either working tax credit or child tax credit for starters) but if you're considering going back to study it's very much worth applying.

How to apply

Full information about the scheme and the eligibility criteria you'll need to meet is available on the Horizons website.

You can check whether you are likely to be eligible for a grant by completing this short questionnaire, and if so go on to complete your application online.

You will need to do this by the 31st July at the very latest, and you'll find out whether you've been allocated a grant by the 31st August.

The scheme usually receives more applications than there are grants available, but if you aren't successful Horizons may suggest alternative sources of funding that you can apply for instead.
