Computer Access Scheme
In January the Government launched the 'Home Access' initiative, which will help low-income families get access to a computer and broadband so they can get online at home.
Families in receipt of certain benefits could qualify for a grant to buy a computer and/or a minimum of one years' broadband access. The programme is aimed at those that need it most and targets families that do not have access to a computer or broadband at home. Depending on the requirements, the grant allows eligible applicants to buy one of the following packages from a participating retailer:
- Full package (a computer, one year's broadband access, service and support)
- A computer with service and support only
- One years' broadband access only
The programme, which is being delivered by Becta, will benefit over 270,000 households across England, and families should apply from January 2010. Where some learners may need additional support, assistive technology will also be available under the programme.
It is hoped the programme will enable people to access not only educational and employment opportunities, but also other benefits, such as cost savings through shopping online.
