Right to buy/Right to acquire

If you were a council tenant prior to the stock transfer in April 2008 you may be able to buy your home under the Right to Buy Scheme. You may have the Right to Buy your former council house if, continuously for two years or more prior to 18 January 2005, you have:

  • been a secure tenant of the City Council
  • been a tenant of another council or housing association
  • or lived in armed forces accommodation.

For anyone else, you will not have the Right to Buy until you have spent at least five years as a public sector tenant.

If you are not eligible under the above scheme you may still qualify to buy your home under the Right to Acquire scheme. This is similar to the Right to Buy process but the discounts are smaller.

Certain types of homes may not be eligible for the Right to Buy/Right to Acquire schemes. These include temporary accommodation; specialist housing for the elderly, the mentally ill, or disabled; or where your property is provided as part of your employment.
